Question: What exactly is a "Festive Board"?
Answer: In years past, operative masons came together to celebrate various
religious festivals. On special days, they gathered in an area of the building
under construction, or in a temporary structure near the site. They dined on
meat and spiced ale, but as the tradition grew, so did the menu. Later, the
meal came to be held in a formal setting at which the Master would preside
over the ceremonies and direct a series of toasts which celebrated fellowship
in the various guilds.
The legacy endures to the present day, as we gather to share a formal meal
celebrating the Masonic spirit. It is an opportunity to enjoy both the social
and more formal side of Masonry. It includes elements of structure, attire,
decorum, toasts and etiquette.
